Westholme School

Inspiring possibility at scale.

Kofi Josephs brought lived experience, mental health and aspiration into an amphitheatre of 800+ students, before continuing the conversation through more personal engagement around the school.

The engagement

Creating a moment students could see themselves in

Kofi spoke openly about mental health, resilience, self-belief and continuing through adversity.

The scale of the room created a shared experience. The story stayed personal: pressure, setbacks and uncertainty do not have to define what comes next.

Why the story connects

Achievement and adversity in the same story

Kofi’s journey includes international basketball and professional sport, alongside bereavement, significant injuries, pressure, panic and periods of serious mental ill health.

Sharing both sides shows that achievement does not require a perfect path—and that asking for support can be part of moving forward.

Beyond the amphitheatre

Impact is not limited to the stage

Smaller groups created room for different questions and more personal reflection.

Together, the large-scale talk and closer conversations made the engagement more human.

Ideas to explore

From inspiration to action

Four connected ideas gave students space to reflect on their own next step.

01

Your circumstances are not your identity

A difficult period, setback or mistake does not have to decide what remains possible.

02

Mental health belongs in the conversation

Speaking honestly and seeking support are compatible with strength and ambition.

03

Self-belief creates an opening

“Why not I?” gives someone permission to try, work and discover what they may be capable of.

04

Inspiration must become action

A powerful story has lasting value when it helps someone take a practical next step.

From the amphitheatre to the classroom, the day moved between a shared message and personal exchange.

The scale of the engagement

Large rooms still contain individual stories.

More than 800 students gathered in one room, each bringing different ambitions, pressures and experiences.

The responsibility is to speak to the room without losing sight of the person inside it.

From inspiration to a next step

What happens after the applause matters

A next step might mean asking for help, responding differently to a setback or returning to a goal with renewed belief.
